From ambition to action: Inside Belgian retailers’ journey with reuse systems and solutions

11:50 - 12:30
Starting January 2030, the EU will enforce a ban on single-use plastic packaging for fruits and vegetables under 1.5kg, requiring businesses to rethink packaging strategies. The transition is already underway, with national and regional frameworks driving action.

The Reusable Packaging Coalition, launched under the Flemish Green Deal Anders Verpakt (Green Deal in Different Packaging), is piloting a six-month reusable mushroom tray trial in the Mechelen region. In this initiative, leading supermarkets and key industry players in Belgium —including retailers, mushroom growers, packaging manufacturers, startups and waste management firms—are collaborating to streamline reuse systems and engage consumers.

Join this session to hear directly from Reusable Packaging Coalition’s retail members Colruyt Group, Carrefour, Lidl, and Delhaize on:

  • How to align with evolving regulations and effectively reshape consumer habits
  • The business case: What is the value in pre-competitive collaboration in sustainable packaging?
  • The key operational and logistical challenges and how these can be overcome
  • Practical learnings to scaling reuse models across markets, in Europe and beyond
