Increasing the adoption of reuse and refill models will be integral to achieving sustainable packaging and eliminating packaging waste. In recent years, we’ve seen an increasing rate of pilot schemes and industry initiatives appear. But all too often, they then disappear without creating the tangible impact promised and inevitably without reaching the scale required.
The Refill Coalition has encountered several delays and suffered the exit of various coalition members, including Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and M&S; Asda scrapped its flagship refill stores in July 2024; Lidl then followed suit a few months later.
In this session, our panel of practitioners will discuss:
- What’s working: Where have we seen success and what can we take from these examples to apply in other industries, geographies and applications?
- What isn’t: What’s getting in the way of implementation? How can we address economic reality, consumer experience and logistical restraints?
- What’s next: How can we ensure reuse and refill models don’t get stuck in pilot mode, but deliver real impact, at scale?
